Offbeat Movies - Should not be missed!!!

As you might have learnt by now, we are foodies and passionate about cooking. Another interest that bonds us together is movie & binge-watching. At times we get so glued, we go to sleep because our body needs some rest.

Bunking office and watching series is injurious to health and wealth. Though we took that risk Once and Only Once!!!

In particular no order, here's the list of non-mainstream movies:

  1. Hyderabad Blues - Acted, directed and written by Nagesh Kukunoor, the romantic comedy captures the confusion that the protagonist is caught by when he comes back to his hometown after living in the US for 12 years. The film perfectly captures the cultural shock and the struggles that an NRI faces in an orthodox society.
  2. Hyderabad Blues 2 -  After the success of his first part, Nagesh Kukunoor made a sequel, unlike most of the other sequels this one is better than others. The story is about the couple from its prequel - Ashwini and Varun. Six years after they got married, Ashwini and Varun come across a new challenge which tests the integrity of their marriage after the man's co-worker tries to seduce him.
  3. Manorama Six Feet Under -  This one is hell of thriller movie and one of Abhay Deol's finest works. Satyaveer accepts money from Manorama, wife of an irrigation minister, to collect evidence against her husband for having an extra-marital affair. He accepts, unaware that he too is being deceived.
  4. The Namesake - Irfan Khan, Tabu and Kal Penn, the cast just cannot get better. The movie chronicles the struggle of immigrant Bengali parents in America. It seamlessly weaves the cultural conundrum that their son Gogoi( played by Kal Penn) goes through while living in the US.
  5. Being Cyrus - If you dig offbeat films, this should certainly be on your list. Played by Saif Ali Khan, this dark film documents the life of a dysfunctional family in an urban set up. And ofcourse it also stars the so funny and versatile Boman Irani.
  6. Matrubhoomi - A heart-wrenching tale of female foeticide and its consequences, gender imbalance and polyandry. As the sex ratio in the village of Bihar is drastically low, a young woman is married to seven men.
  7. Parzania - (Translation: Heaven and Hell on Earth) Inspired by a true story, a Parsi couple attempt to find their son who tragically went missing in 2002 during the Gujarat riots which broke out after the Godhra train burning incident.
  8. Supermen of Malegaon - Malegaon, a small town tucked away near the heart of India geographically, is fraught with communal tension and under severe economic depression. To escape the harsh reality of their world, its people seek refuge in the fantastical world of cinema. This passion for cinema has spurred a group of cinema enthusiasts to make their own films-quirky, low budget, socially aware and notoriously funny spoofs of Bollywood films. Their ambition has grown and now they are ready to take on Hollywood and Superman.
  9. Shoot on Sight - A cop of Scotland Yard is given the task to investigate a police shooting of a suspected Muslim terrorist in the London Underground. Things get complicated as he is a Muslim.
