Bathing Soap (Audio inside)
Welcome,
I am going to talk about soaps today.
I was
really intrigued by this subject and wanted to understand everything about
it, right from its origin and how it made ways in our day to day lives. Well,
Wikipedia suggests that Babylonia (an ancient state in central-southern
Mesopotamia “current day Iraq and Syria”) and Babylonians around 2800 B.C. made
the first soap, which was used in the textile industry and medicinally. The
written soap recipes found later suggests that the soap was made from fats
combine with wood ash and water. Another reference is of Ancient Egyptians,
they used soap ritualistically to purify the body and clothes. This confirms
that Soap existed for centuries and we too are always told how Soap is so
great for personal cleanliness. In recent times, soap have made its way to
cosmetics too. They come in different scents, shapes, and sizes.
If all
the ancient stories are to be believed, the soaps were used predominantly to
clean clothes, medicinally, or for industrial purposes. I did not find any relevance
yet on how and when exactly soap made its way in bathing. Though as per Ayurveda,
in India we used different herbal things such as gram flour (Besan) with
turmeric, Reetha, and Shikakai for hair. Most new-born babies even today are
massaged thoroughly with Besan.
But
clearly, in the 21st century, we see a lot of different soap brands being
launched, advertised, and promoted by various celebrities. Majorly all these
advertisements tell us how good their product is, how it will make your skin
glow. Since these ads are keep coming on the television, we directly or indirectly
start believing in them and never really see if they are really good for us.
All
these big branded soaps have different chemicals in them like caustic soda, sodium
lauryl sulfate etc which do more harm than good to our skin.
Some of
us also fall for these advertisements and feel the product will make their skin
fairer however the fact is your skin colour depends on something called as
melanin which we have in our body. Higher the melanin darker the colour of your
skin.
Considering
this I would urge everyone to use natural products like multani mati, turmeric,
curd, or milk and use them by making a paste. All these are easily available in
our kitchen.
If you
are not keen on using these and are accustomed to using soap then there are few
Indian companies make natural soap from cow dung. They are exceptionally well
and keep your skin healthy.
Thank You!
