#Jijivisha#Oil#Health
There are too many brands and different types of oils
available in the market. They all try to convince us saying their oil is best
for our health, be it filtered, refined, double refined, virgin
etc. Then there are different types - Sunflower, Olive, Soybean, Groundnut
oil etc.
If you are using any of the above listed types, then
you are at the right place. Keep reading as today we are going to help you
identify the healthiest cooking oil.
We Indians have little extra love for oil. Honestly if you use the right oil in your cooking
then there is no harm even if you eat “Tarriwali” sabji sometimes.
Generally, we prefer those clear and clean looking
refined oil because that is what we have been having since our childhood or the
advertisements bombard us with its benefit. However, refined oil basically
welcomes weight gain, increase in cholesterol, heart diseases etc. By making a
right change in our oil, we can easily take our health to a different/better
level.
Refined Oil –
In India unfortunately most of us are using refined oil for cooking. Our
markets are flooded with refined oil be it rice bran, groundnut, sunflower,
olive, soybean etc. Although the word ‘Refined’ means ‘sophisticated’
but in medically it is referred as ‘spoiled’ oil. Refined oil is
extracted in multistage process in which oil is extracted at very high
temperature (over 200 degree Celsius) using chemicals solvent. Due to which all
the vital nutrients are lost. In the process of being extracted, these oils
oxidize and turn into trans fats. The smell is so rancid that
a cleaning process must take place using bleach to
deodorize it. So, what is left behind is Colorless, Odorless, Tasteless,
Nutrition less oil which is packed and sold to us as healthy option.
Try to avoid any refined oils – period. They are
cheap. They are processed and they are downright dangerous to your
health.
Olive Oil (Virgin, Extra Virgin) - Another thing to mention is that nowadays in India, people who are bit health conscious are switching to Olive oils. Mind you, it is due to intensive marketing from EU we can find Olive oils in almost all the supermarkets. So, the question arises, Is Olive Oil healthy? Of course, it is, but living in India we will not recommend it to you for four main reasons:
1. Very expensive
2. Due to its growing popularity it is more
prone to adulteration
3. You should consume what grows in your
region.
4. Olive oil does not complement well with
Indian cooking.
So now are we left any options you may ask? The answer
to that is, Cold Pressed Oil or Wood Pressed or as we call it Kachhi Ghani Oil.
Cold Pressed –
It is an ancient method in which no heat is involved, Oil is extracted by
pressing. It retains all the nutrients and it has its seeds aroma and have
natural foam in it. They require high quality seeds and hence high-quality oil
is extracted. The stickiness in the oil determines its protein, the more the
merrier. They are anti-inflammatory and good source of oleic acid that boost
immune system. We advise you to cook these oils on low flame as they can lose
its nutritional value if exposed to high heat. If you plan to switch to Cold
Pressed, consume the seed oil based on your location. For example, if you are
based out of Maharashtra, go for Groundnut Oil (Another tip for people in
Maharashtra, use sunflower oil for frying), Kerala – Coconut Oil etc.
So, folks, make this
simple change and say goodbye to all the heart diseases.
Very interesting, As you said Olive oil doesn’t complement Indian cooking, I also heard from a dietician in a webinar that olive oil when cooked is harmful so it is good to use in salad dressings.
ReplyDeleteYeah, its best if we avoid it in my opinion and Switch ourselves to Cold Pressed oil.
